Advertising watchdogs have again criticised Toyota over claiming "low emissions" in its marketing.

It has upheld complaints about an advert for the RAV4 XT-R, in which it claimed great fuel economy and low emissions.

Toyota unsuccessfully argued that readers would see from the advert's image that the RAV4 is a SUV, and would understand that the low CO2 emissions claim was a comparison with other SUVs, not the whole market.

The Advertising Standards Authority told Toyota to ensure the basis for CO2 emissions claims were stated clearly in future.

Sister brand Lexus received similar warnings in October 2008 and May 2007 over low CO2 claims.
