BMW's Mini plant at Cowley, Oxford, is temporarily ceasing production this weekend because Spanish fuel protests have prevented it from getting parts supplies.

Its workforce is being laid off for the weekend. BMW said it was working closely with their unions and hoped to resume production on Monday.

Lorry drivers in Spain have been blockading major cities in a protest over diesel prices since Monday.

The strike is affecting manufacturers across Europe, who are unable to get parts out of Spain as all ports and airports have been blocked.

BMW said it was unable to maintain production due to a lack of crucial parts but hoped to resume full production shortly.

BMW Plant Oxford employs 4,700 people in three shifts, and produces around 700 Minis per day.
