MG Motor UK has achieved a new sales record of 20,000 units this year to date, beating its 2020 volumes by more than 1,500 units.

In 2020, MG saw a sales rise of 41% over 2019, while at the end of August the brand had achieved a 65% year-on-year growth in new registrations, driven largely by new models such as the MG5 EV and MG HS plug-in hybrid.

MG also has the highest pure EV mix of any manufacturer selling both electric and ICE models. As of the end of August, MG held a 1.6% share of the UK new car market and achieved 2.2% of the nation’s total registrations in the last full sales month.

The Chinese-owned car maker was shortlisted in the Manufacturer of the Year category at this year’s AM Awards.

Guy Pigounakis, commercial director at MG Motor UK, said: “To pass the 20,000 milestone with three-and-a-half months to go is incredible news and it shows just how popular our new models are with the British car buying public, and also how engaged and driven our dealer network is as the brand continues to grow.

“MG is rapidly establishing itself as a major player in the UK car market and a highly desirable franchise for dealers, as evidenced not only by our record sales, but also in the sustained growth and geographical spread of our dealers across the UK, who are doing a great job in engaging the public with our amazing brand.”

The brand currently offers six models in the UK including three plug-in cars – the MG ZS EV, the all-new MG 5 EV and  the MG HS plug-in hybrid.

MG Motor UK appointed former Volkswagen, Hyundai and Nissan franchised car retail specialist Andrew Stuart as its new head of sales in July.
