Slaters of Abergele has announced that it will close its Abergele Nissan dealership due to ‘pension deficit’ – with staff from the facility now facing redundancy.

The Daily Post newspaper reported that the dealership, on Market Street, Abergele, has had a presence in the town since 1912 but financial difficulties had forced an end to trading at the Nissan and Citroen joint franchise site.

Customer service operatives for the retailer were busy cancelling appointments and informing loyal customers of the closure when AM called today.

But a spokesman for Slaters told the Daily Post that the group’s Vauxhall business’ in Colwyn Bay, Llangefni and Llanwnda would continue to trade as normal.

The spokeswoman told the newspaper: "Slaters of Abergele Ltd, who, like many companies has struggled to work through a deficit in its pension fund despite a successful period of sales and overhead reductions.

"Some staff will be able to apply for positions which will be available within the new structure."

The Daily Post reported that it was unclear how many staff would be made redundant.
