Read Motor Group expects to drive beyond a 2022 turnover target of over £100 million after it opened the doors to a new Suzuki GB and MG Motor UK dealership site in Grimsby.

Grimsby-based Read celebrated the opening of the facility on the East coast town’s Altyre Way six months after adding its first Stellantis new car franchises with the acquisition of £29.9m turnover Alfa Romeo Retailer of the Year Beechdale Motor Group in July last year.

The development came as South Coast Volkswagen retailer Breeze Motor Group joined the Suzuki dealership network with a new franchise in Poole.

Read’s move to the 370 square-metre, 12-car showroom will see its previous home for MG and Suzuki in Grimsby, on Railway Street, become a fleet business centre.

Quoted by Business Live, managing director Mike Read said that the developments would create four new jobs.

Read said his business had gone from “strength to strength” since its 2014 addition of Suzuki to its franchise portfolio, with MG added in 2020 ahead of a “fantastic year in 2021”.

MG was one of 2021’s biggest new car registrations volume winners in a market reported to be 1% down by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Registrations grew 66.2%, to 30,600, last year after it added the flagship HS SUV and MG5 SW electric estate car to its line-up and significantly grew its retail network.

Suzuki outsold the wider market with a 5.7% rise in registrations (to 20,976), meanwhile.

Breeze Motor Group is among the car retail groups investing in the Japanese car brand at the start of 2022.

It marked the return of Suzuki to Poole with the January opening of its first franchised site with the OEM, on West Quay Road, Poole.

Group managing director, Mark Langford, said: “We are delighted to add the Suzuki franchise to the group and are excited to bring our 21 years’ experience of automotive retail and local market knowledge to a new brand.

Steve Prew, network development manager for Suzuki GB, added: “We welcome Breeze to the Suzuki family and look forward to working with them to reintroduce Suzuki to Poole and the surrounding area.

“We wish the group every success with our brand.”
