Carwow's YouTube channel has reached one billion views after its new electric vehicle (EV) range car test video became its most watched new upload on the channel.

The online vehicle marleting portal said its YouTube channel had grown 100% year-on-year and averages 56 million views, with an average of 39.3 million hours watched, each month.

The YouTube channel of the car buying comparison site features car reviews, comparisons and drag races.

Mat Watson, editorial director of Carwow, said: “When we launched our YouTube channel four years ago, we made it our mission to provide consumer car buyers with accessible and brutally honest car reviews that would help rather than confuse in the decision-making process.

"The continued increasing success of our YouTube channel proves that was the right call and that we are fulfilling a need in the market.

“What’s particularly interesting is the growth in appeal in electric vehicles (EVs). Earlier this year we uploaded a 30-minute video where we compared the real-world range of six popular electric cars.

"The video has proved very popular with more than five million views in less than two months. Also, the content clearly resonated with the viewers as the audience retention rate is almost 50 per cent, which is very high.”

Carwow said that the interest in electric cars has been mirrored on its website, Watson said: “February (2020) saw a 243% year-on-year increase in battery electric vehicle (BEV) configurations on Carwow by visitors exploring their greener motoring options.

“This is a clear indicator that car buyers accept that at some point in the future, they will need to move to a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or pure electric car and are looking for an honest, in-depth expert to help them make the right choice.”

Carwow said that its YouTube channel has a total of 68.5 million hours watched since it’s launch in April 2016 and a total of 1,175 videos have been uploaded to date (March 9 2020).
