This mini 4x4 would be the perfect car to bounce around a Mediterranean island on holiday.

Day-to-day, its lacklustre power is frustrating on long A-road journeys.

Still, despite light steering, it handled itself well up steep ice-covered hills during the recent snowfall, no doubt helped by its 4x4 capabilities and a centre differential-lock. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, reverse parking sensors, electric mirrors, and remote central locking.

Due to its little engine, this baby SUV is at its best nipping around an urban landscape – devaluing the need for 4x4. Until March 31, Daihatsu is offering all Terios with five years/45,000 miles free servicing as a sales incentive.

  • Engine 1.5-litre petrol
  • Price £12,725

First drive: Daihatsu Materia – on sale now

The Materia is no car for the shy and retiring. Its boxy styling is unlike any other mini-MPV on the market. As Japan’s answer to the Mini, the Materia will boost the brand’s image among the young and trendy, given the right marketing support.
