Big Motoring World has opened its new 3.5 acre, 450-vehicle Peterborough Fengate store – expanding its footprint to five used car dealerships.

Big Motoring World kick-started its ambitious growth plan with the acquisition of Peterborough-based used car supermarket group SW Car Supermarket, in October last year, which operated two large dealerships in the city.

SW's boss, Anton Khan, became chief operating officer of the combined business.

Since acquisition by BIg Motoring World, the Fengate premises had remained closed while undergoing a £4m renovation.

The re-launch comes six months after the rebranding and refurbishment of SW's Peterborough Werrington store as a Big Motoring World dealership.

Peterborough Fengate dealer principal Adam Hanif was joined by Big Motoring World chief executive Peter Waddell for the opening.

Waddell said: “We’re delighted to be opening the doors of our fifth car supermarket branch and expanding our award-winning car buying experience further within the city of Peterborough.

“The news today marks an important milestone in our national expansion plan and our commitment to the residents of Peterborough.

“At Big Motoring World, we’re big on what matters to our customers, which include everything from value, choice and quality to service, convenience and trust. Our new Peterborough Fengate store will deliver on all of these brand promises, and more.”

The opening follows after growth investor Freshstream acquired an undisclosed stake in the business from owners Waddell and John Bailey.

Hanif, who also runs the neighbouring Peterborough Werrington supermarket, added: “In a recent AutoTrader study, Big Motoring World ranked top out of 22 of the largest automotive retailers when it came to brand knowledge, range of cars, fair pricing, customer service and post-sales support.

“This shows that our vision and brand manifesto are more than just words on a piece of paper, but rather something that’s embedded into our business culture.

“Our new Peterborough Fengate store will allow us to provide a better car buying experience within a stone’s throw of the city centre.”

Big Motoring World said it will be expanding its 650-strong workforce as operations scale up at the Peterborough Fengate supermarket over the coming months.

The used car supermarket group recently underlined its “big” UK-wide expansion plan with the launch of a new brand identity and website.
