9: Saving lives

defibrillatorUnity Automotive is rightly proud of its record in helping out its customers and managing director Jon Mathers lists numerous stories of working through the night to help people who had broken down and lending them cars. However, Mathers is particularly proud of the programme the group started last year, in which it cares for the local community at each dealership.

One of the programme’s greatest successes was at its Coventry site, where it worked with the local council, the Lions, and fast aiders to sponsor a fully equipped and liveried fast aider car to provide an immediate medical response for the local community.

“Combined with this we have fitted a defibrillator unit outside the dealership and have had nine members of staff trained in its use,” said Mathers.

“As this business is opposite a busy train station with a high volume of passengers, we can offer at our dealership an immediate solution to heart attack victims combined with our fast response vehicle based less than a mile away.”

Mathers said this has had a big impact on locals, with a very positive PR effect, including lots of news coverage, “but the vehicle and the defibrillator are constantly in the public view as a constant reminder to our support of local community”.
