Hyundai has added a hybrid engine to its Kona crossover line-up, with prices starting from £22,495 for the new alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) version.

The new iteration of the compact SUV uses the same 1.6-litre petrol engine and electric motor from the Ioniq Hybrid, giving it a power output of 141PS, with CO2 emissions from 90g/km.

Sitting beneath the zero-emission Kona Electric EV, the new Hybrid is likely to appeal to company car drivers as cheaper alternative to the conventional petrol and diesel models.

AM reported ealier this year that demand for the fully-electric Kona had grown to such an extent that customers were being offered preferential lease terms on Ioniq Hybrids as they endured lead times of over 12 months.

Exterior changes include a bespoke 16-inch wheel design and Blue Drive badging to the wings and tailgate. Interior changes include white accents around the air vents and gear lever surround, as well as accompanying white stitching to the seats.

The car also uses the more dynamic multi-link suspension setup from the Kona Premium GT.

Hybrid versions are offered in three trim levels: SE, Premium and Premium SE.

Base models get a seven-inch touchscreen audio system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, rear parking sensors with camera and Lane Keep Assist, on top of the regular Kona’s spec.

The Kona Hybrid Premium features a 10.25-inch touchscreen sat-nav with connected telematics, 18-inch wheels, AEB and adaptive cruise control, plus Krell audio system and keyless entry.

Range-topping Premium SE gets LED headlamps, heated and ventilated leather seats and head-up display.

Ashley Andrew, managing director of Hyundai Motor UK, said “The New Kona Hybrid joins the 1.6 and 2.0 Tucson 48V Hybrids, 39kWh and 64 kWh Kona Electric models and the Nexo Hydrogen Fuel Cell to form one of the industry’s strongest eco-friendly SUV line ups.

“The Kona family now offers something for everyone, with the economical 1.0 turbocharged petrol engine Kona models, the confident and able 4WD Kona Premium GT, the latest electrified combustion engine hybrid technology of New Kona Hybrid and the long range zero emission capability of Kona Electric.”

The Kona Hybrid will go on sale on September 30, with a five-year warranty.
