The shift to electric vehicles (EVs) could be at risk due to a lack of exposure, with new research revealing that one in five future car buyers (19%) say they will never move to an EV.

However, increased access to test drives and hands-on experiences is emerging as a crucial solution to overcome scepticism and accelerate the country’s transition to electric mobility.

The findings, published in the latest EV Transition Tracker by Motability Operations, underline how every experience with an EV – from simply being a passenger to owning one – significantly increases the likelihood of a driver considering a switch.

While 43% of the public have never driven or even been a passenger in an EV, only 21% of this group say they would consider buying one. In contrast, almost half (46%) of those who have been a passenger in an EV say they are open to switching, rising to 74% among those who have charged an EV and 90% among current owners.

“People can’t embrace what they haven’t experienced,” said Andrew Miller, CEO of Motability Operations. “That’s why we’re offering electric test drives and charging demonstrations to help customers understand the vehicles, assess whether an EV is right for them, and overcome some of the common concerns – especially around accessibility, range, and charging.”

The Motability Scheme’s Headlight community survey found 44% of its customers have driven an EV, more than double the general UK public, and 48% are considering choosing one within the next three years. This suggests that exposure, paired with support, is driving confidence.

The research highlights a perception gap. Among the general public, EVs are viewed as high-tech and premium: 51% describe them as “technologically advanced” and 33% as “luxurious.” Yet EV owners themselves are more likely to describe them as “familiar” (50%) and “good value for money” (47%) - qualities more aligned with everyday needs.

The report also identifies hybrids as a vital steppingstone. Among hybrid drivers planning a new car purchase, 47% say they are likely to move to an EV within three years, suggesting that exposure to electrified drivetrains builds confidence and eases the transition.

With 50% of people viewing hybrids positively, only slightly behind petrol (57%), they offer a middle ground for hesitant drivers while helping manufacturers meet upcoming Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) sales targets ahead of the 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel sales.

Industry experts are now calling for more brands and retailers to prioritise real-world exposure through test drives and transparent information.

Ian Plummer, commercial director at Auto Trader, said: “Our data shows that once people drive EVs, they rarely want to go back. And seeing friends or family succeed with electric encourages others to follow. Test drives and demonstrations - like those offered by Motability Operations - are critical. More retailers need to adopt this approach if we’re serious about achieving net zero.”
